How to Find, Report and Pitch the Stories Behind COP-17

The Armenian Project (TAP) and the Media Initiatives Center (MIC) are offering a two-day workshop for local journalists and students interested in covering the upcoming COP-17, led by top international climate and sustainability editors Philippa Nuttall from Sustainable Views (Financial Times) and Michael Kodas from Inside Climate News.
A follow-up session will be led on October 8-9 by a former New York Times science reporter Eric Niiler to recap, review, and help participants hone their pitches to secure pre-, post-, and daily coverage.
Workshop topics will include:
- What is a COP, and how can you cover it?
- Pitfalls and opportunities
- Stories from outside the COP venue
- Independence and balance in biodiversity reporting
- Multimedia environmental journalism
- Opportunities in new journalism business models
- Follow-up session – Pitching 101: How to pitch to land the story

Philippa Nuttall — Editor, Sustainable Views (Financial Times)
Brussels-based editor/journalist with 20+ years covering climate, clean energy, sustainable finance, and biodiversity. Currently edits the FT’s Sustainable Views; previously Environment & Sustainability Editor at the New Statesman and founding Editor-in-Chief of Energy Monitor. M.A., University of Cambridge.

Eric Niiler – science reporter (NYT)
Eric Niiler is a U.S.-based climate/science generalist (NYT, ex-WSJ) covering broad climate policy, atmospheric and ocean science, and U.S. regulatory rollbacks, with a mass-audience narrative style. Eric taught science writing at Johns Hopkins University for seven years in a master’s degree program.
